Upgrading to 35-inch tires is one of the most common goals for Toyota owners but anyone who wheels hard knows the truth: a simple cab mount chop won’t cut it. The only reliable solution is a Cab Mount Relocation (CMR) or Body Mount Relocation (BMR) kit.

At DRT Fabrication, we pioneered the cab mount relocation kit market with innovations that others later copied. From overlay plates that protect your frame to the industry’s only fully boxed cab mount, we’ve set the standard. Here’s why our kit is the go to choice for serious off-road builds.

Why You Need a Cab Mount Relocation for 35s

There’s a lot of misinformation about what it takes to clear 35s on a Tacoma, 4Runner, GX460/GX470, or FJ Cruiser. Some say a cab mount chop is enough. Others think lift height alone will prevent rubbing.

The truth:

  • Lift height only helps slightly wheel offset is the biggest factor.
  • A body mount chop cuts into the factory mount, but you can only cut so far before hitting the factory bushing.
  • Under articulation, even 34s will rub without a CMR.

That’s why a cab mount relocation kit is the most aggressive and most effective solution. It provides much more clearance than a body mount chop and ensures proper clearance during real off-road articulation.

Why Overlay Plates Matter

The Engineering Behind Overlay Plates

When welding new cab mounts directly to the thin factory frame, you’re creating a stress concentration point. The factory frame steel is relatively thin and designed to flex, while a new cab mount is built from much thicker material. Without an overlay plate, the transition between thin and thick metal becomes the weak link leading to cracks over time, especially under off-road abuse.

An overlay plate solves this problem by acting as a load distributor and reinforcement plate. Here’s how:

Spreads Load Across a Larger Surface Area:

  • If you built a house and set the support posts directly into the soil, they’d sink over time. That’s why builders use concrete footings: they spread the load over a much wider area, making the whole structure more stable. The overlay plate is the footing for your cab mount — distributing the load so the frame can carry it reliably, even under off-road stress.
  • The overlay plate increases the effective contact area between the mount and frame, lowering stress per square inch and preventing cracks.

Eliminates Sharp Stress Risers

  • The factory frame curves and transitions aren’t flat. If you weld a thick, flat plate to it, you create small gaps or high points where stress concentrates.
  • Our multi-bend overlay plate matches the radius of the frame perfectly, eliminating stress risers and allowing for even weld penetration and strength.

Adds a Second Layer of Structural Rigidity

  • The overlay essentially creates a “boxed rib” effect on the frame rail, stiffening it locally without compromising its natural flex.
  • This reinforcement means the cab mount and frame move as one unit rather than two pieces trying to fight each other under load.

Improves Leverage Balance

  • The cab mount is essentially a cantilevered bracket the bushing and bolt create leverage forces that want to twist the mount off the frame.
  • The overlay plate extends the weld footprint, moving the neutral point of stress outward and reducing leverage on the welds themselves. This significantly increases fatigue life.

We were the first company to implement overlay plates in CMR kits, and while others have copied, none match our precision. After nearly six design revisions, we’ve perfected the fitment down to changes as small as .030”(less than the thickness of a credit card)

The Only Fully Boxed Cab Mount Relocation Kit

Another reason DRT stands out: our kit is the only boxed CMR/BMR on the market.

Competitors often leave the bottom open, which lets water, mud, and debris collect inside the cab mount. This leads to corrosion and premature failure.

Our boxed design:

  • Seals the mount completely.
  • Prevents water intrusion.
  • Adds strength and rigidity for off-road abuse.

We also use a smaller OD polyurethane bushing with no bulky bolt-on mount, which maximizes clearance while keeping ride quality.

Solving Common Issues Others Ignore

One of the most common complaints with other cab mount relocation kits is noise. The bottom bushing washer contacts the inside of the tube, creating squeaks and clunks.

Our kit includes custom-machined washers that solve the issue entirely. The problem is so common that we even sell our hardware kit separately to fix competitor kits.

Why DRT Cab Mount Relocation Kits Lead the Market

  •  First to use frame overlay plates in CMR kits
  •  The only fully boxed design available
  •  Perfect-fit multi-bend overlay plates (not flat shortcuts)
  •  Six design revisions for precision fitment
  •  Custom washers to eliminate noise issues
  •  Smaller OD poly bushing for maximum clearance

At DRT, it’s not about thicker steel it’s about smarter engineering. Every feature is designed to maximize clearance, distribute load properly, and deliver a cleaner and easier install.

Do You Really Need a Cab Mount Relocation?

If you plan to run 35s or larger on your Tacoma, 4Runner, GX, or FJ, and actually use your vehicle off-road, the answer is yes. A cab mount relocation is the only way to guarantee clearance during suspension articulation.

It’s a more aggressive solution than a body mount chop but it’s also the most reliable and beneficial. That’s why the DRT Cab Mount Relocation Kit has become the benchmark in the industry.
