More Than Just A Skid Plate

One of the Tacoma’s biggest limitations off road is breakover angle.

Breakover angle is the maximum angle a vehicle can pass over without the belly contacting the obstacle. It is primarily determined by:

• Wheelbase
• Ground clearance at the center of the vehicle
• Tire size
• Suspension compression

Tacomas have relatively long wheelbases. Once you start hitting more technical trails, you quickly find yourself dragging the belly or “turtling” on obstacles.

Traditionally, there are three ways to improve breakover angle.

Most Tacoma owners chase ground clearance with bigger tires, suspension lifts, or portal axles. The problem is that each solution comes with compromises. Larger tires require extensive modifications, suspension lifts quickly run into geometry limitations, and portal axles add significant cost and complexity.

The DRT Flat Belly Skid Plate Kit takes a different approach by increasing clearance where it matters most. By gaining approximately 2" of clearance at the transmission crossmember and up to 4" at the transfer case, the Flat Belly Kit delivers the equivalent of nearly jumping from a 35" tire to a 40" tire at the truck's lowest points without the added height, cost, or compromises. Combined with 37s and a properly designed suspension system, it provides ground clearance comparable to many portal-equipped trucks while maintaining a lower center of gravity, better drivability, and a significantly lower overall investment.
